Timeline: (June 1 – August 31, 2015)   15 hrs/ week

(Sept. 1 – November 20, 2015) 5 hrs/ week

Purpose:

To support further development of the UW-Extension Micro-farming program as both an innovative and replicable model which fosters a diverse group of emerging farmers. The Micro-farming program seeks to continue building its impact as a sustainable program model, collaboratively working with UWEX colleagues, partnered organizations, and local businesses.

Job Duties:

  1. Work directly with Program Coordinator in recording impacts of the micro-farm program – create news blurbs and short videos to be shared with community partners, and the general public.
  2. Assist micro-farmers in meeting infrastructure needs – exploring options for building soil quality, sharing equipment, and improving water access at micro-farm sites
  3. Research sustainable funding models used nationally to support beginning farmer programming – evaluating opportunities to implement funding model into the micro-farming program
  4. Assist Program Coordinator in organizing workshops and educational programming, based on communicated needs of the micro-farmers
  5. Meet with Micro-farming PC and Milwaukee County colleagues to plan cross-programmatic education and events – with emphasis on the Nutrition, Youth Development, and CNRED program areas.
  6. Work directly with micro-farmer David Johnson in generating community involvement and awareness at new urban farm site opening this summer at a remediated brownfield.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience/ passion working with urban agriculture and local food systems.
  • Experience/ passion working with diverse audiences and building community
  • Creative and self-motivated to start projects and embrace collaboration
  • Word processing, social media, and some video/ photo experience
  • Access to reliable transportation

Preferred Qualifications: Bilingual, bachelor’s degree, grant writing experience; farming or gardening experience

Location: UWEX Milwaukee County Office — 9501 Watertown Plank Road, Building A, Wauwatosa, WI.

Benefits and Salary:   $15.20 per hour
